This talk explores the common obstacles to practice the Five Hindrances of: restlessness, sleepiness, doubt, grasping and aversion. The Hindrances are discussed in the context of the Buddha’s central teaching on the Four Noble Truths.
When we are identified with these five mind states they are called hindrances to seeing the way things actually are. Each one is explored along with skillful antidotes to help overcome them.
Understanding the five hindrances, particularly the forces of grasping and aversion - as a vehicle to wake up from our suffering and to discover peace and ease in the present.
With so much emphasis on dukkha, on overcoming the five hindrances, etc., our practice can at times seem bleak. We can balance this and lighten the heart by knowing where and how to find the joy in practice.
