The greatest gift is the
gift of the teachings

Sylvia Boorstein's Dharma Talks in English
Sylvia Boorstein
My greatest joy is giving the gift of love and hope through the dharma, knowing it is possible for humans to transform their hearts. These dharma gifts include paying attention, practicing clarity and kindness and addressing the suffering of the world--which, of course, includes ourselves.

2001-02-07 Untying The Knots 60:18
Referencing her own experiences, Sylvia explores the stories we make up for ourselves to substantiate or justify certain views (opinions) that we hold about things -- some to the point of making them into "truths." After considering the possible origins of these views, Sylvia exposes the profound suffering caused by holding these views and the stories around them. Taking it a step further, she wonders: What is the relationship between hope and opinion? Is it wrong to hope or is it part of the nature of the human organism? Perhaps, she concludes, it is the solidified view we hold around a hope that causes suffering.

1999-03-20 Lifelong Heart-Healing 65:16
This Dharma talk given at the end of a 6-week retreat is about remembering what we are doing here, moving into the middle of our lives so we can see clearly, and paying attention so that we don't miss an opportunity for an awakened heart. Sylvia encourages us not to coast to the finish line, but to do the work we came to do in order to manifest an awakened heart. She also discusses healing from mistakes.

1999-03-14 The Liberating News Of Impermanence 53:41
Everything arises and passes away, like the breath. How to not be frightened by this or experience "existential angst" from inevitable loss in connection is often what brings us into practice. Liberation is in the heart that is wide enough to hold joy as well as the greatest pain of loss. In managing inevitable loss, we become kinder, softer, gentler and much more careful. To liberate "fixed point of view," we stay awake and attentive, always open for new insights to our stories about ourselves and others. Views change, bodies change, relationships change, but what does not change is the capacity of the heart to respond with compassion and lovingkindness.

Vipassana means seeing things clearly. When we are overwhelmed, our view can become inhibited. Like a miracle, seeing from a different view allows us to see and do in a different way. All we need is one moment of clarity to feel freedom, and all else passes. Meditation is one revelation after another, leading one to see with more kindness and compassion for the benefit of all beings.

1995-02-03 The Difficulties Of Loving Beings 57:28
In this Dharma talk, given at a Metta Meditation residential retreat, Sylvia examines some of the key blocks we come up against that keep us from living in our true nature of joyful, loving, compassionate beings. Illustrating with stories, both poignant and humorous, she demonstrates that, our awareness to the contrary, we repeatedly fall away from living in our true nature, because we may forget who we really are. We may continue, for various reasons she discusses, to hold onto grievances that lock us into our own prisons of pain and suffering. It is through the liberating knowledge of meditation practice that we can free ourselves from this pattern. That is, in fact, the "edge" of this practice: that we can fall away into a sense of separateness, and that we are able to bring ourselves back to the truth of our oneness.

1994-02-05 Intention 52:39
This Dharma talk given at the beginning of a metta retreat, notes that this is a practice of intention. It asks, "What are our goals? Where are we going with it?" Sylvia reminds us to be mindful of our intention in practice. Clarity of intention is a motivator of zeal. It can help us see where we are going. It can also fortify and strengthen our practice, helping us see through the painful resistance to loving. Sylvia shares some candid stories of her own beginning practice with some suggestions for enhancing our practice.
