2011-06-03 Opening Talk for Transforming Self, Transforming World 67:12
David Loy
Opening Talk for a retreat that explores the relationship between personal and social transformation. There are profound parallels between our individual predicament and our collective situation, and this retreat explores their nonduality. If the self is an insecure construct haunted by a sense of lack, we gain insight into our preoccupation with attachments such as money, fame, power and romance, and how the 'three poisons' (greed, ill will and delusion) have become institutionalised.

2011-06-02 Deep Listening and Speech Practice in Challenging Situations 60:37
Donald Rothberg
The essence of speech practice in difficult situations is to find ways to stay connected, in one's inner experience and use of speech, to our awareness, love, and wisdom. We focus on a number of supports for such practice, including grounding and centering in the body, being open to difficulties as opportunities for learning, understanding the judgmental mind, and, especially, cultivating deep listening.

2011-05-24 Satipatthana Sutta, Third Foundation: Division Through Worry 59:12
Rodney Smith
Worry attempts to protect us from every contingency. It becomes a pattern and view of life where I am the guardian and protector of my security. Worry is actually a process of self-affirmation because we keep affirming our power over what life brings forth. If I let down my guard, life would be chaotic and out of control, and therefore I need to worry to have everything turn out as I wish. Worry and planning elevates us to the status of a god while we are actually being controlled by fear.

2011-05-21 Habits, Action and Personality 46:13
Shaila Catherine
Underlying tendencies (toward greed, hate, and delusion) fuel habits that obstruct our freedom. Tendencies toward irritation, anger, craving, and ignorance may arise in times of stress when our mindfulness is weak, and they distort our perception of things. But tendencies arise in both luxurious and modest environments, in situations of comfort as well as pain. How we relate to experience reinforces patterns and conditioning. Greed, hate, and delusion are causes for the arising of kamma (karma). The simile of the two darts describes the difference between simply enduring bodily feelings of pain, and proliferating reactions of anger and aversion that add suffering to our pain. This talk explores the primary tendencies of sensual desire, anger, and ignorance, and shows how we can free the mind from their influence in our everyday life.

There is a certain aliveness that comes when we speak honestly in a vulnerable, yet clear communication. It aligns us with our truth and we become authentic and wisely powerful. But it's often not easy to do that. I've based this talk on my son Adam's final thesis from Naropa University where he recently graduated with a B.A. in somatic and contemplative psychology. I was quite impressed and moved by it. It made me think. I wanted to share it as we explore Wise Speech together.
