What is it to age and how do we apply, learn and discover the dharma at this phase of life? We recognize the difficulties and joys of aging. Having lived a long life can bring a mature equanimity as the basis of our practice and life. Dharma points us to the simplicity of life and practice highlighted in Buddha’s instructions to Bahiya.

James Baraz
At times our meditation practice is a powerful delicious experience. The factors of awakening like concentration, calm, joy or equanimity may be strong. As wonderful as that is, the mind can easily grasp as if that were the real goal of practice. But when we're attached or take ownership of those states they become a trap--sometimes referred to as the stink of enlightenment--and we miss the true freedom that practice can reveal.

Rob Burbea
Please Note: This series of talks is from a retreat led by Rob Burbea and Catherine McGee for experienced practitioners. The requirements for participation included some understanding of and working familiarity with practices of emptiness, samatha, metta, the emotional/energy body, and the imaginal, as well as basic mindfulness practice. Without this experience it is possible that the material and teachings from this retreat will be difficult to understand and confusing for some.

Sally Armstrong
Patience is one of the paramis, the 10 beautiful qualities of the heart/mind that we develop in our sincere practice. Patience is essential if we are to deepen in meditation, especially on long retreats, as it allows us to be present when things are difficult or not exciting, which can be a lot of the time! True patience not just tolerance, a willingness to put up with things until they get better. Patience is a full body experience, a commitment to being present with care and acceptance. Patience brings with it many other wholesome factors such as contentment and equanimity.

2017-01-09 Buddhist Studies Course - Seven Factors of Awakening - Week 1 (2017) 1:28:08
Mark Nunberg
This course examines the Buddha’s teachings on: mindfulness, investigation, energy, rapture, tranquility, stability of mind, and equanimity. It is the development and balancing of these seven wholesome factors that set in motion insight and the release from all grasping and stress. Here are three study resources to use as you wish, including the passage that I read from last night:

In times of uncertainty and emotionally charged situations the teachings show us the power of equanimity–a balance of mind and heart. This is very different from a resigned quietism. Equanimity involves the courage to feel all our intense emotions and act from a balanced, committed heart.
