2024-02-24 Q&A 43:11
Ajahn Sucitto
Q1 Yesterday I had this thought that there is no shame in suffering. I'm wondering what is noble about the noble about the suffering in the first noble truth. Q2 06:17 Could you differentiate between awareness and consciousness? Q3 16:18 Please speak about bowing. Q4 20:39 Do you start and end your day with any reflections or recollections or practices? Q5 28:03 What is happening when right view and release become partially obscured again after right view has been attained? Why is it becoming obscured? Is cultivation of the empty field the main practice then and purification? Q6 33:32 It's taken several retreats to uncover this tremendous sense of guilt. When it arises it makes sense to avoid reconstructing the stories. the habit is to shut down the feeling. It appears as a pain in the chest. It shifts to holding back tears. Is this karma rather than the person?

2023-10-03 The 5 Recollections, Samvega and Karma (Retreat at Spirit Rock) 59:18
Gullu Singh
In this talk, Gullu reflects on the ancient practice from the Buddha of the 5 subjects for frequent recollection which invites us to contemplate that we are of the nature to age, get sick, to die and be separated from all the dear to us (one way or another) and yet, we have agency to develop qualities of mind and heart that allow us to move through these innate difficulties of life with more grace. Awareness of death can bring a sense of spiritual urgency (samvega) which is useful in cultivation practice.

2023-06-06 Changing those Deep Patterns 26:19
Ayya Santussika
We may think that our anger, anxiety, regret, jealousy, longing, sorrow, etc. are just a part of our character, or our karma, or that they assail us and we have no control over them or the power to abandon them. In this talk, we look at how to challenge this perception and stop feeding our mental and emotional patterns.

2023-06-02 At the Shrine of Forgiveness 22:02
Ayya Medhanandi
It’s good to clear everything before we die, to leave no spiritual debts that may heavily impact our karma. Seeing the powerful healing of joy and kindness, I take up the practice of inner cleansing day by day, applying metta – loving-kindness practice – through the luminosity of forgiveness. This potent flame of reconciliation melts away any harmful residue or holding in the heart so that not a flutter or tremor of ill-will remains. Let us avail ourselves of its power. At the shrine of forgiveness, we light the light of joy and freedom within while fostering happiness for other beings. This is the fount of both medicine and cure – reconciliation and liberation of the heart.

2022-04-23 What is our identity? 50:56
Ajahn Sucitto
Investigation reveals this to be a mix of causes and conditions (inherited karma) along with actions and attitudes established through compulsive reactions. Using the Buddha's core teaching of the dukkha/ suffering that comes with clinging, we learn to use the feelings in the body as a guide to allow us to move out of this programmed self.

2022-01-16 The Five Recollections and the Cultivation of Metta in Daily Life--(Retreat at Spirit Rock) 67:19
Gullu Singh
This Dharma Talk reflects on the 5 subjects for frequent recollections (also called the 5 remembrances): (1) I am of the nature to age, I have not gone beyond aging, (2) I am of the nature to sicken, I have not gone beyond sickness, (3) I am of the nature to die, I have not gone beyond dying (4) All that is mine, beloved and pleasing, will become otherwise, Will become separated from me (4) I am the owner of my kamma, heir to my kamma, born of my kamma, related to my kamma, abide supported by my kamma. Whatever kamma I shall do for good or for ill, of that I will be the heir. This is offered as a chant as a way to connect the teaching to the heart and the body. The talk then explores the liberative idea of Kamma (Karma) where we have more and more agency through the practice to seed our intentions so that our acts of body, speech and mind are more wholesome, skillful, and leading to the alleviation of suffering for ourselves and others. The talk then explores various strategies for the cultivation of mettā in daily life.

2020-09-29 The Present Moment is Not the Goal 34:41
Thanissaro Bhikkhu
There’s a common understanding that the purpose of meditation is to fully arrive in the present moment. However, the Buddha taught people to focus on the present moment not as a goal, but as a place where work is to be done to go beyond the present. This talk, based on the essay, “The Karma of Now” will explore the Buddha’s understanding of the present moment, and the implications of that understanding, not only for the practice of meditation, but also for Buddhist practice as a whole.
