This series of talks and guided meditations explores the development of the practices of both Lovingkindness and Compassion, with particular emphasis on the radical possibilities of Awakening that they bring. Through these practices we come to develop deep and beautiful qualities of heart as a real resource both for ourselves and the world, and also open ourselves to the profound and liberating understandings that can emerge from this path of love.

Compassion

Jack Kornfield

This talk was given on the theme of compassion in honor of Veterans' Day.
Compassion is the natural relationship of the heart to sorrow -- the
movement of the heart in sympathy with other beings and with one's self.
Relating to life with compassion allows us to move through this world of
birth and death, of joy and sorrow with wisdom and grace.

Thanissara

This talk explores how entering the Third Noble Truth opens the mind beyond its habitual addiction to interpret life from a sense of being a personality, needing to 'sort things out'. Opening the mind implies an ability to tolerate the reality of uncertainty. This talk also explores compassion and loving kindness as fearlessness and includes a simple guided meditation on well-being.

Even As A Mother
43:16
Ayya Medhanandi
Can we fearlessly accept all that life gives with a wise and compassionate heart? We see how the sun shines unilaterally on all beings giving life and nourishment. But we must use sharp wisdom to discern what is harmful and abandon that; and to know what is wholesome and cultivate that. Even as a mother, may we emulate the Buddha's compassion that flows without bias in all directions across millenia.

On the Street Where You Live
29:04
Ayya Medhanandi
When a river flows into the sea it acquires one taste, the taste of salt. As our meditation deepens, regardless of age, health, race, gender, culture or social status, delving into the mind, we discover one taste, that is the taste of truth. The world is full of suffering, not what we want it to be. And on the street where you live is your monastery, your garden, the thorns and the flowers, the compost and the field of cultivation – from feeling hopeless despair to the dawning moment when you understand the origin of suffering and the way to the Deathless. Letting go in the very marrow of the moment, spread peace and compassion in all directions – on the street where you live.

Ceasing of Self
47:22
Ajahn Sucitto
The world is on fire with becoming. It’s not so deliberate or conscious, but an involuntary reflex. Hold the spacious openness rather than the objects, notice how things shift, change and pass through. It’s not actually oneself, it’s patterning. In Dhamma practice these patterns have to be exposed so they can be seen compassionately, spaciously, calmly and allowed to unfold and give their energy back into awareness.

How Do I Know I'm Deluded?
37:03
Ayya Medhanandi

Seeing the honest truth of the mind's delusion can teach us to develop a healthy mind and know true happiness. It is a doorway to freedom, opened through mental cultivation including loving-kindness and compassion for ourselves and all beings.

Faith
55:12
Kamala Masters
The Buddha likened faith to a seed, an intention, to grow in the direction of wisdom and compassion, to venture beyond what is known. The seed sends down roots which take in nourishment to grow the seed. The roots are likened to virtuous activity. From there, sprouts grow, blossom and bear the fruits of serenity and insight.

Compassion - The Heart Beat Of The Buddha's Teaching
1:13:40
Marcia Rose
Compassion - one of the two wings of liberation: It's the heart felt connection to beings, and our way of being in this world that ensues from this. Compassion: Arising out of a clear and deep understanding/knowing of Dukkha (the unsatisfactoriness of all phenomena); the root cause of this suffering and the way of it's end.
Compassion--the heart of tenderness, openness and great strength. As we turn our capacity to unconditionally open to and accept towards suffering, we connect with our courage and strength to genuine care and move towards the alleviation of suffering.
